Human Nature is not a machine to be built after a model set to do exactly the work prescribed for it, but a tree which must grow and develop itself on all sides, it is only the cultivation of individuality that contributes to well developed human being – John Stuart Mill

My name is Jase Teoh and I am the Faculty Instructional Technologist at SUNY Empire State College at the Long Island Center. My education background includes psychology, counseling, curriculum & instruction, social justice, gaming & simulations, and educational technology. Prior to becoming involved with gaming and simulations, I worked for many years in student affairs in the Midwest.

In addition to my duties, I also adjunct in several courses such as Computer Concepts, Introduction to Computers, Topics in Narrative Computing, Research on the Internet, Designing Online Learning Environments, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Web 2.0 Tools, and Game-Simulations Based Learning. I have taught an undergraduate course in Child Growth and Human Development, and was a teaching assistant to courses in Using Microcomputer Productivity Tools and Education in Drama & Literacy.

Current publications are Drama as a Form of Critical Pedagogy: Empowerment of Justice in the Pedagogy and Theater of the Oppressed International Journal, Vol.1(1), Pre-service Teachers in Second Life: Potentials of Simulations in the Journal of Educational Technology Systems, Vol.40 (4), and Forum Theatre in Education: Teaching students to deal with oppression and diversity effectively in All About Mentoring, Vol.40 published by Saratoga Springs, NY. Two other published proceedings include Second Life, a Simulation: Barriers, Benefits, and Implications for Teaching and Second Life: Pre-service Teachers’ Precautionary Tale. In addition, I also published a book chapter in Identity, Learning and Support in Virtual Environments (Educational Futures: Rethinking Theory and Practice) titled Pre-Service Teachers in Second Life: The Dichotomy with the Net Generation published by Sense Publishers.

I have an Ed.D in Curriculum & Instruction from Illinois State University; my thesis won the Ora Bretall Scholarship, the Curriculum & Instruction Scholarship, and the Ada Belle Clark Welsh scholarship, all of which contributed to the development of educational theory and practice. I also have an M.A. in Counseling & Psychological Services from Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota where I worked in a non-profit outpatient hospitalization program (ZUMBRO VALLEY) as an intern for 7-months. I also volunteered in a troupe known as Action Theater to promote social justice endeavors using the Pedagogy and Theater of The Oppressed techniques developed by Augusto Boal. I obtained my B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Public Relations from the University of Northern Iowa where I worked in the Department of Residence Life.

As an early adopter of simulations, I have a strong interest in virtual worlds, avatars, identity formation, gaming industry, and teacher education and technology. I am also interested in Web 2.0 tools, qualitative research, drama in education, and the future of computing.

At home, when I am not reading, writing, watching television, cleaning, or cooking, I can usually be found in the gym, in the bookstore, or outside on a hiking trail or bike riding.
